Summer’s a week away. Well, in San Francisco, let’s just pretend it is. And with the new season come plenty of long, lazy days to soak up, if not sunshine, then some great reads.

For a fresh perspective, we asked dozens of notable Bay Area people from outside the publishing world – from academics and artists to entrepreneurs and politicians – for their summer reading recommendations. Not all of the books are frothy titles you might associate with a day at the beach, nor are they all hot off the presses. Perhaps we should draw inspiration from our previous president, who (no joke) wiled away a recent summer on his Texas ranch with Camus’ angst-ridden “The Stranger.” Now there’s a novel for foggy days.

Phil Tippett, Founder of Tippett Studio
“House of Leaves,” by Mark Z. Danielewski (2000)
This tome is a very creepy modern archaeological dig of mad Lovecraftian proportions … and beyond.
